accuse, Inappropriately Directed

The heinous Maryville, Mo., rape case has reignited cultural tendencies in the direction of victim-blaming.

Emily Yoffe, of Slate, admonished school women to stop getting intoxicated, citing a study displaying that more than 80 per hundred of campus sexy assaults involve alcoholic beverage. One could reasonably suppose that an identical or larger percentage of campus sexy assaults furthermore engage men. Men are more likely rapists than women so, by Yoffe’s reasoning, women would be wise to bypass interactions with men.

But that’s not what she – or any person additional – is proposing. Everyone knows that men, expressly, are not the difficulty any more than a couple of shots of PatrĂ³n are the difficulty.

How do we eliminate rape and rape culture? absolutely not by blaming victims or putting the onus on women to defend themselves.

It’s hard work altering a culture that values hyper-masculinity and delicacies women and young women as sexy house. It’s not so tidy and simple as telling women to stop consuming, stop going out late at night, stop wearing short skirts. It takes bravery to demand community accountability, and to change the heritage situation that conceive rapists.

newspapers outlets may need that courage, but the Ms. base for Women stands powerful in its conviction that violence against girls and women can be made a rarity, rather than a shameful truth.

The first step requires treating rape survivors with dignity and esteem rather than second-guessing victims' conclusions surrounding their assaults.

Instead of “What did she expect to occur at one in the morning after sneaking out?” (as Fox News guest Joseph DiBenedetto inquired about one of the Maryville victims), we should be questioning the motives of the perpetrators: “Didn’t they believe two times about picking up young women late at night and sneaking them in through a window? Didn’t the boys understand that alcoholic beverage would smaller their inhibitions and cloud their judgment?
